Open Adaptive Stories (iOS app and web app). Last updated 18 July 2026.
Open Adaptive Stories is a free, open source app that turns photos into stories a child can read with an adaptive switch. The short version: the app does not collect, store, or share any personal information about you, and nothing you make in it ever leaves your device unless you share it yourself.
Information the app does not collect
The app has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising, and no tracking, and there is nothing to sign in to. It does not gather your name, contacts, location, or usage data. The iOS app makes no network requests at all.
Photos, recordings, and stories
Photos you take or pick, voice recordings, and the stories built from them are stored only on your device. Recognizing people, animals, objects, and text in photos happens on the device with Apple's own frameworks; no image or recording is uploaded anywhere. Deleting a story deletes its files. When you export a story, the app hands the file to the iOS share sheet and you choose where it goes; an export option lets you leave voice recordings out of the file.
Camera and microphone
The camera is used to photograph books and scenes when you ask it to, and the microphone records your voice for a spot when you ask it to. Both need your permission, work entirely on the device, and are never used in the background.
Voices and speech
Spots are spoken with voices installed on the device, using Apple's speech synthesis. Using a Personal Voice needs its own iOS permission. Speech happens entirely on the device; the app does not record, collect, or transmit anything about the voices you use.
The web app
The story maker at openadaptive.org/stories/app runs entirely in your browser. It has no accounts and no analytics, and story files open from and save to your own computer. When you ask it to import a book from Monarch Reader, your browser fetches that book from Monarch Reader's servers, which see the request the way any website sees a visit. The web app sends nothing else anywhere.
Children
The app is made for children to use with a parent or therapist. Because it collects nothing, there is nothing to collect about a child either.
Changes
If a future version ever changes any of this, the policy here will be updated first and the change described plainly.
